About the director and scriptwriter, Sunao Katabuchi
Born in 1960, Sunao Katabuchi majored in animation at Nihon University College of Art’s Cinema Department. After meeting Hayao Miyazaki, who was giving a guest lecture at the university, Katabuchi began working as a scriptwriter on Miyazaki’s films while still a student. He served as assistant director on 1989’s “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, and made his directorial debut with the 1996 TV series “Famous Dog Lassie”. He then directed the 2001 STUDIO 4°C feature “Princess Arete”. On “BLACK LAGOON” (2006), Katabuchi worked as director and also handled series configuration and scriptwriting. In 2009, Katabuchi directed “Mai Mai Miracle”, an acclaimed animated film about a girl who lives in 1950s Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture; the film was based on careful research of the time period, and its tale of everyday heroine Shinko was infused with tales from a thousand years ago, leaving the audience charmed and fascinated.

Masao Maruyama - Producer, MAPPA
 Born in 1941 in Miyagi, Maruyama entered Mushi Production in 1965. In 1972, he founded animation studio Madhouse with co-founder Osamu Dezaki, Rintaro, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri. In 2011, Maruyama established newly animation studio MAPPA. His principal works include YAWARA!, Ninja Scroll, PERFECT BLUE, Millennium Actress, Nasu: Summer in Andalusia, Tokyo Godfathers, PAPRIKA, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, DEATH NOTE, Summer Wars, Mai Mai Miracle, Kid’s On The Slope, Terror In Resonance, Ushio and Tora, GARO and more.

Taro Maki - Producer, GENCO
Born in 1955 in Gifu, Maki graduated from Waseda University in 1977 and entered Tohokushinsya Film before heading to Pioneer LDC in 1990. Maki founded the production company GENCO in 1997. His principal works include PATLABOR THE MOVIE, Tenchi Muyo!, Millennium Actress, A Tree of Palm, Azumanga Daioh, Tokyo Godfathers, Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabille, Highschool D×D, Sword Art Online and more.
